But how hard could it have been to dye their existing curaçao blue? In the 1960s, Alfred Hitchcock notoriously hosted a dinner at a London Hotel, where all of the courses were dyed blue, to shock and amuse his guests. ![]() Blue was an alien, unexpected color for food or drink. Even at the time I came across that book, ideas of the future were mingled with exoticism in popular science fiction, Star Trek, for example. When Bols first produced its Blue, in the first decade of the twentieth century, its novelty may have fed a growing sentiment towards futuristic aesthetics, which would eventually evolve into art deco. Older, more jaded and more likely to scoff at such things, I have to remember that once upon a time, the idea of blue booze seemed really cool. Leafing through it, I noticed a photo of a many-layered pousse cafe, and one of the ingredients was blue.
